Overview: A small group of students have a discussion while the rest of the class observes; afterwards, the entire class discusses what occurred in the small group discussion.

According to the University of Illinois Online Teaching Activity Index, students in the activity will:

  • If in the fishbowl: demonstrate their knowledge of a topic; provide a logical argument for a position concerning topic
  • If observing the fishbowl: evaluate the arguments presented by others; reflect on new insights provided by the discussion
  • Everyone: develop a higher awareness of the concept; have an increased understanding of various viewpoints

Use in an ILI to explore topics like social networking privacy, digital learning or research approaches.
